Pound coins were in the news this week, with an estimated £30 million fake £1 coins in circulation in the UK.  A word of advice to Tottehnam, if Manchester United just so happened to have paid Berbatov’s thirty million pounds transfer fee in pound coins then they may want to start double checking!!

Everton v Liverpool

The big game this week has to the be the 179th Merseyside derby.  If you are fan of backing red cards and yellow cards then this is the game for you,  16 out of the 32 meetings have resulted in red cards.  I can always guarantee Phil Neville will find himself in the book for a hasty challenge (1.9 odds on Betfair) and an own goal may just occur once again in this fixture!!!

Betting tips:  Who will win this derby?…Who knows?  It’s hard to predict these derby games, but judging on form Liverpool look to be likely winners, especially with Everton only picking up points away from home this season.  But the main bet I’ll be backing is Stephen Gerrard to score.  Needing one more to make 100 goals, what better team his 100th against? Back him to score at anytime at odds of 3.75 on PaddyPower.  Also back Robbie Keane to score at odds of 3.25.

Wigan v Man City

The last time City played Wigan away from home the scoreline was 1-1.  From a quick glance this game may look like a Man City win, but City have failed to beat Wigan in the Premiership.  Wigan have been in good form lately, with the 5-0 win over Hull being their biggest result this season.

Betting tip: City are the favourites to win this game at odds of 2.46 (Betfair) with the home team priced at odds of around 3.25.  Let go for the value bet here and back Wigan, they’ve been in good form and Man City may be a little weary after having to play extra time mid-week.  This looks like it could be cracking game, I would like to think there will be goals galore!!!

UPDATE- The Merseyside Derby produced alot of whistle blowing moments by the referee, meaning that there was no flow to the game.  Liverpool deserved the victory (as predicted), but Everton can count themselves unlucky to have Cahill sent off.  There was no luck in picking Gerrard and Keane to score, but I had to back Neville to get a yellow card when I saw the odds for a yellow jump up to around 2.3 on Betfair, so when he made that crashing challenge I celebrated like it was a goal!!

The Wigan game brought us the biggest betting winner of the season, courtesy of a Zaki penalty.  Hopefully this will be the turning point and we can get a good run of winning bets now.  Goals were predicted in this game, if only I had backed over 2.5 goals as well!!

There were some great Champions League games last night, including the Liverpool match, Marseilles could of nearly of got a winner at the end, but Gerrard’s goal was a deserved winner.

Betting tips

We’ll try and ease ourselves in the Champions League betting this season, so bet on over 1.5 goals in the Juventus v Zenit St Petersburg match at odds of 1.34, hopefully it will be an open match like I’ve seen in the past Zenit games.

Fun bet-  With all the England players Cole, Lampard and Gerrard scoring yesterday, lets got for a small fun, bet on Wayne Rooney to score at anytime against Villarreal at odds of 2.8.  Let’s pray Rooney follows the good example set by his England teammates!!

UPDATE- In the end it was a tight match and the two teams could only muster one goal between them and there wasn’t quite the amount of goals as I expected.  A better value would of been to lay Lyon at odds of 1.75 against Fiorentina, that’s the benefit of hindsight!!!

The most surprising result of the week must of been Britney Spears picking up three MTV awards, whatever next?  Theo Walcott scoring a hat-trick?  Surely not.  Well we thought it would be the end of the world on Wednesday, but Capello and his men put in an impressive performance against the Croatians.  If only these bunch of part time footballers could play like that more often, then they may have a chance of qualifying for major tournament.  Continue reading »

After the international friendlies mid-week it’s back to the Premiership. Portsmouth vs. Man Utd looks to be an interesting match, United are under strength in their second game so another draw may be on the cards. Arsenal take on Fulham, surely another 3 points for the Gunners and another step closer for us to winning our ‘Top at the end of month- August’ bet?  If only betting was  that easy!!

Betting tip-  Liverpool v Middlesbrough, Torres has picked up where left off last season and has already opened his goal scoring account.  Back him to score at anytime (odds of 2.04 on Betfair) and to be first goal scorer (odds of 4.6).  Hopefully Benitez won’t be in his rotating moods and he’ll let the Spanish hitman start the game.

Tottenham v Sunderland- It’s always interesting to see an ex player come up against his old club,  Steed Malbranque was one of the better Tottenham players last year, and he’ll line up against them for Sunderland.  As a fun bet, back him to score at anytime tomorrow, odds of 6.50 on William Hill. Chimbonda will be another player to look out for.

UPDATE:  Not a very good start the season at all for us on the betting front, I’m feeling a bit like Paul Jewell’s Derby who haven’t won in the league since September 2007, hopefully we won’t need to wait that long for a winner!!  Malbranque nearly scored against his old club and the fun bet nearly came off, only the cross bar got in the way.  Torres couldn’t win our main bet of the day either, making it a miserable a weekend of betting.

Blackburn 1-1 Hull
Fulham 1-0 Arsenal
Liverpool 2-1 Middlesbrough
Newcastle 1-0 Bolton
Stoke 3-2 Aston Villa
Tottenham 1-2 Sunderland
West Brom 1-2 Everton
Man City 3-0 West Ham
Wigan 0-1 Chelsea
Portsmouth v Man Utd
